Vancouver Stops Being Somewhere Else

For years, Vancouver's job on screen was to be somewhere else: a cheaper Seattle, a stand-in New York, a generic American city. Its landscapes, tax incentives and favourable exchange rate pulled Hollywood productions north. Now, Variety reports, independent filmmakers are increasingly choosing to cast Vancouver as Vancouver.

Optimist: That's the difference between being a location and being a setting. A stand-in city is chosen for what it can disguise; a city playing itself is chosen for what it can show. When filmmakers stop writing around their own streets, a place's specific texture becomes the point instead of an inconvenience.

Skeptic: The economics didn't get more romantic. Variety's framing still leads with landscapes, tax incentives and the exchange rate — the same pitch that made the city a stand-in. Playing yourself can be a niche as well as a statement, and a niche still has to pay for itself.
