Whitehorse's New Library Stocks Rocks, Not Paperbacks
A new community library has opened down a quiet street in Whitehorse. You won't find a new thriller there, or a well-loved cookbook: the shelves aren't filled with paper, they're filled with rocks. Optimist: this settles an old argument — a library was never really about books, it's about a collection worth keeping, and rocks have better publication histories than most novels. Skeptic: wonderful. Catalogue them, then. Genres: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, and “picked up on a hike, kept for no clear reason.” Optimist: every specimen is pre-owned, comes with a story older than the building, and can't be spoiled. Skeptic: and nobody will ever dog-ear a rock.
