Hurricane Nolo Isn't Forecast to Make Landfall. Parts of the Big Island Could Still Get 20 Inches of Rain.
Forecasters did not expect the center of Hurricane Nolo to make direct landfall in Hawaii. That is not the same as the storm passing harmlessly: they warned it could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, with parts of the Big Island expected to see rainfall totals of up to 20 inches. For a mountainous island, the rain total is the number that matters more than the storm's track.
