A Study Finds 153 Overdue Cases Under Canada's Species at Risk Act

CBC reports that a new study has found a legal gap in Canada's Species at Risk Act that can leave species waiting years for protection. The study's count: 153 of 288 cases were overdue and still unresolved as of January 2025. That is what makes a procedural gap hard to see. Nothing dramatic has to happen for a species to sit waiting; on this account, the delay is something the law allows rather than something anyone has to break. A broken promise has a moment attached to it. A gap has a queue. The follow-up question is whether the gap gets closed, and how the cases already stuck behind it move once it does.
