2,776 Shots Over Five Years: Laika's 'Wildwood' Blends Puppets and Pixels

Laika's Wildwood took more than five years of stage animation and visual-effects work to produce 2,776 shots, each one a blend of handmade puppets, miniature sets and digital imagery. Production VFX supervisor Steve Emerson has described the defining challenge of Travis Knight's fantasy epic as making sure the technology served the stop-motion performances. That ordering — performance first, pixels after — is what separates a hybrid pipeline from a film that simply happens to contain puppets. It also explains the schedule: stop-motion doesn't scale the way rendering does, so five years and a shot count in the thousands are two ways of measuring the same deliberate slowness.
