Why NASA Flies Lab-Grown Brain Models to Orbit — and Keeps Copies on Earth
NASA experiments focused on human and plant health and drug-resistant organisms are bound for the International Space Station aboard SpaceX’s 35th Commercial Resupply Services mission. Among them is an experiment that sends small, lab-grown models of the human brain to the station for five weeks.
The design is the part worth pausing over. Researchers compare the tissue models that traveled to space with identical ones kept on Earth, to determine how a short spaceflight affects the human brain. Those Earth-bound copies are the baseline — the thing that turns an unfamiliar environment into a measurable difference.
