Twenty Named Pacific Storms by September 28, Against a 1991–2020 Average of 13.5

By September 28, the 2026 tropical cyclone season in the northeastern and central Pacific had produced 20 named storms, nine of which reached hurricane strength, NASA's Earth Observatory reports. For comparison, the 1991–2020 average by that date is 13.5 named storms and 7.4 hurricanes. That same stretch of ocean had Hurricane Nolo near Hawaii and Hurricane Polo off the Baja California peninsula lashing land with high winds, storm surge and heavy rain.
