The Coens Collect Lyon's Lumière Award to a Spanish-Language 'Hotel California'

Joel and Ethan Coen took the stage at Lyon's Lumière Film Festival on Friday evening to collect the Lumière Award, marking four decades of filmmaking with what Variety calls a characteristically irreverent tribute to the inventors of cinema. Their entrance music was the Gipsy Kings' Spanish-language rendition of "Hotel California."

An award ceremony is the least Coen-like setting imaginable, and a Spanish-language "Hotel California" as the walk-on fits the description Variety chose. The prize carries the name of the brothers the ceremony treats as cinema's inventors; the acceptance, at least as described, treated the occasion accordingly.
