Star Trails, Fishing Boats and City Lights, Seen From 258 Miles Up

A long-duration image released by NASA shows star trails above Earth, with the blue lights of fishing boats and the yellow lights of Indonesian cities stretched along the scene below. It was taken from the International Space Station as it orbited 258 miles above the Banda Sea on Sept. 20, 2026, and is credited to NASA's Anil Menon. Two kinds of artificial light — working boats and whole cities — sit under the arcs traced by the stars during the exposure.
