Northern Ontario Chiefs Back an Indigenous-Led Search-and-Rescue Pilot

First Nation leaders in northern Ontario are calling for the launch of an Indigenous-led search-and-rescue pilot program, CBC reports. The call follows the discovery of five missing people found dead in Thunder Bay this spring; three of them were members of Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities.

At the nation's annual Keewaywin Conference, chiefs voted in favour of a NAN search-and-rescue pilot project. The vote turns a demand into a proposal with a sponsor — though the shape of the program is still being worked out.
