Nepal Counts the Homes Lost to Its Flash Floods

In September 2026, Buddhist monks conducted death rituals in Nepal's Trishuli river valley to honour victims of the devastating flash floods. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has released a Rapid Disaster Needs Assessment laying out the challenges facing disaster-affected Nepalis, including the roughly 33,000 people who have lost their homes. Ritual and assessment are the same disaster seen from different ends: one marks who died, the other marks who has nowhere to return to.
