NASA's COSI telescope will hunt gamma rays from antimatter and dying stars
The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is coming together at UC Berkeley. This wide-field gamma-ray telescope will study the Milky Way's most energetic phenomena: the creation and destruction of matter and antimatter, and the final stages of stellar lives. The detector assembly — seen in a July 8 image being lifted into place — uses flex circuits covered in silver material to carry signals to readout electronics. It's a collaboration spanning UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Lab, UC San Diego, the Naval Research Laboratory, NASA Goddard, Northrop Grumman, Space Dynamics Laboratory, the Italian Space Agency, and other institutions.
