How Space Station Solar Arrays Unfurl Like Yoga Mats

To augment power generation on the International Space Station, NASA has deployed Roll Out Solar Arrays (IROSAs) over the past five years. Rather than using conventional rigid panels, the lightweight design launches as a compact cylinder and unfurls like a yoga mat after installation. The autonomous, self-deploying system reduces mass and volume at launch while minimizing mechanical risks during rollout.
