Happy With the Body, Afraid of the World It Moved In

Writing on Psyche, André Aram describes two years spent living as a trans woman, and the sentence carrying the experience splits cleanly in two: happy with the body, fearful of the world that body moved through.

It is worth noticing how far apart those halves can sit. Contentment with a body and safety in a world are different conditions, measured against different things, and one can be satisfied while the other is not — a distinction that tends to get flattened whenever wellbeing is treated as a single verdict.

Read as an account rather than an argument, the line is also a reminder that the surrounding world is not scenery in decisions like this one. It is a variable with its own weight.
