Crazy Rich Asians Is Getting an HBO Series, Not a Movie Sequel

Producer Nina Jacobson revealed at IndieWire's Future of Filmmaking Summit that the franchise is getting an HBO series rather than another theatrical sequel. The sentence is short; the implication isn't. A film hit no longer has to continue as a film, and television offers the thing sequels are always chasing — room to keep telling the story without needing a fresh opening weekend. Whether a series can carry what the film did is a craft question, not a distribution one, and it's the one worth asking.
