AMD Buys World Labs for $8.2 Billion, Pending Approval
Chipmaker AMD and the world-models company World Labs have announced that AMD will acquire the AI company by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval, in a transaction valued at $8.2 billion. World Labs was founded in 2024 by computer vision scientist Fei-Fei Li with fellow researchers Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, on $230 million in funding — some of which came from AMD itself. World models, in this context, are AI systems meant to provide a useful, predictive simulation of the physical world; Ars notes that competing architectures exist but that many approaches involve training a model on large volumes of video data.
