A Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Makes DOC NYC's Short List
DOC NYC announced its short lists on Wednesday, and Deadline calls them an often reliable gauge of which documentaries are connecting with awards voters as Oscar season heats up. Among the features named: Ava DuVernay's 14th, and You Can See Everything, a documentary focused on Elizabeth Holmes directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.
A short list is a scheduling document and a mood ring at once. Landing on it says a film has momentum; it does not say the field has settled, and the festival's own list usually runs longer than any set of nominations will.
The credit worth pausing on is the Holmes film. Fielder's name attached to that subject is enough to make the choice of register — straight, sideways or something else — the thing to watch for.
