A Cree Word for the Color of Singed Beaver
The Cree word pahtaaunaakun means “color of singed beaver” in Southern East Cree, and NASA's Earth Observatory calls it a particularly apt description of the distinctive brown hues of the waters draining into Hannah Bay and Rupert Bay in Canada. The word evokes the rich brown of humic-substance-stained water that was flowing into the two bays in late September 2026 — and it carries something else besides, the long role beavers have played in the region's mythology and history.
