A Cray-1 Replica Runs on Thirty 2012-Era Mac Minis
The Museo de Historia de la Computación in Spain has unveiled a 1:1 scale visual replica of the Cray-1, the famous supercomputer from 1976. Instead of sourcing expensive, cutting-edge tech to run the system, the team powered the project with 30 2012-era Mac Minis. The museum reportedly achieved 1.5 teraflops using all 70 available cores before one node went offline. There is something pleasingly stubborn about the choice: the exterior honours 1976, while the guts are a pile of ageing Apple desktops doing the actual work.
