The pitch behind door-to-door book peddling
In the subscription book trade, traveling salespeople visited homes and businesses carrying sample volumes, took orders in advance, and returned later to deliver the finished books and collect payment. While men made up the vast majority of these door-to-door peddlers, some publishers actively recruited women to the trade. The strategy rested on distinct commercial expectations: publishers believed prospective customers would find women more sympathetic, and that female agents were uniquely suited to sell health and hygiene titles directly to female buyers.
