The Hard Part of Rescale's Triage Agent Was Getting the AI to Understand the Job

Rescale's triage agent automates the classification and routing of nightly end-to-end test failures. In AWS's account of the build, the hard part wasn't writing code. It was making sure the AI understood what the team wanted to build.

The work followed AI-DLC, which AWS describes as an open-source, AI-centric methodology for software development. The engagement itself was a five-day, in-person workshop: AWS architects guiding while Rescale engineers worked hands-on-keyboard, co-building in real time. Working in mob format, the team answered more than 20 clarification questions generated by the AI before settling the scope.

Two architecture pivots emerged during the build, and the team validated each one before changing course. That is the detail worth keeping: the workshop was not a straight line from intent to implementation, and the discipline on offer is checking a pivot, in a room, before taking it.

Take

An interview is a stranger first deliverable than a repository skeleton. If understanding intent is the bottleneck, 20 questions from the model is exactly where a build should begin.

Pushback

Questions are cheap; the mob is what makes them count. Twenty questions answered by a room that has to agree on each answer is a different artifact from twenty answered alone at 11pm.
