Students, Unions and Yellow Vests Take to French Streets Over Prices
Students, trade unionists and Yellow Vest activists are taking to streets around France to protest high prices and inequality, Deutsche Welle reports. Authorities say they fear the rallies could turn violent.
The composition of the crowd is the story. Students, organised labour and the Yellow Vests are not natural allies in ordinary French politics, and a coalition built around the cost of living is broader than any single union or party's membership — which makes it correspondingly awkward to answer with one policy concession.
