Saturn's Best Night: What 'Opposition' Actually Means
NASA's skywatching guide for October flags the 4th as the night Saturn reaches opposition, calling it one of the year's best opportunities to see the ringed planet. The word describes geometry, not brightness: opposition happens when Earth passes between the Sun and Saturn. The practical payoff NASA points to is duration — Saturn is visible for much of the night rather than only part of it. The same guide notes the Orionid meteor shower peaks on Oct. 21–22, with a caution attached: moonlight may interfere, so the better window is before dawn, after moonset.
