Producer Prices Are Outrunning Consumer Prices, and Fuels Are Doing the Pushing

A chart in an Econbrowser post benchmarks two series to February 2026 — the consumer price index and the final-demand producer price index — and over that stretch the producer line has climbed much faster. What matters is what the author thinks is doing the climbing: fuels and related products are leading the upward movement, which leads him to write that he thinks we can be "relatively assured" that PPI will be leading CPI.

Stack those claims and you get a forecast with a sequence built into it: fuel prices are pushing the producer index now, and the consumer index is where the effect should turn up next. The hedge deserves attention too. The chart shows a gap; the ordering of the two lines is the author's expectation rather than a reading of it. It is worth watching precisely because it can be checked — if the producer line keeps running ahead without the consumer line following, the fuel-led story loses its punch.
