MK2 Picks Up Shorts by Corbet, Mendonça Filho and Sciamma

Short films by Brady Corbet, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Céline Sciamma are joining the international sales catalogue of MK2 Films. Variety reports that the Paris-based company is expanding its collection of lesser-seen works by established filmmakers, and that the acquisitions were unveiled during Lyon's Lumière Film Festival — headed by Cannes director Thierry Frémaux — and its International Classic Film Market. It reads as a bet on name recognition over running time: a short by a director with a following can travel through a sales catalogue in a way an anonymous short generally cannot, and a festival market built around classic and archival cinema is a natural place to announce it. The interesting question is whether the catalogue treatment turns shorts into something bookable rather than merely awardable.
