Ke Huy Quan's Memoir Begins With the Escape, Not the Comeback
Ke Huy Quan arrived in America as a refugee, and the films that made him a recognizable face as a kid — Indiana Jones and The Goonies — came early. Then came decades away from the spotlight, and later an Oscar-winning comeback. His new memoir, Never Say Die, doesn't start with the comeback. PBS's Amna Nawaz spoke with him on the News podcast Settle In about the book, which opens with his family's harrowing attempts to escape post-war Vietnam. It's a reminder that the tidy arc usually told about Quan — child star, disappearance, redemption — is a later chapter. The book puts the family's flight first, which is presumably the point of writing it at all.
