Iran's Hijab Enforcement Moves Off the Street and Into the Workplace

Deutsche Welle reports that as more women in Iran reject rules on wearing hijab headscarves, hardliners are shifting their focus away from "morality police" street enforcement and toward social pressure applied through workplaces, services, and businesses.

That is a change in the location of coercion rather than its disappearance. Street policing is visible, and visible refusal can be organized around it. Pressure routed through an employer, a service counter or a business relationship is harder to gather around — and harder to refuse when the cost of refusing lands on your job or your access to a service.
