His Grandmother Lost Her Citizenship in 1965; His Next Film Follows the Return

Reza Rahadian's second feature as actor-director, Casparina, follows a journalist stripped of her Indonesian citizenship in 1965 who comes home decades later to children who grew up without her. It is inspired by the life of his grandmother, Francisca Casparina Fanggidaej, and it is being presented within the Asian Project Market at Busan. The premise carries its own architecture: a state's decision is served on one woman, and the bill arrives with people who had no part in it. The drama sits in the return, and in what a family does with decades it never got to argue about.
