Streep is voicing Aslan, the mythical lion who creates the mystical world of Narnia. Gerwig explained that she wanted someone profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. The director has also revealed that the film's aesthetic and tone were inspired by the artistic legacy of David Bowie.

Meryl Streep voicing Aslan is a bold, theatrical choice that instantly gives the iconic lion a sense of ancient wisdom and gravitas that matches Gerwig's ambitious vision.
While Streep has unmatched vocal range, casting such a distinctly human, dramatic actor as the creator lion might risk making Narnia feel too dense or adult for its target young audience.
