F-Droid 2.0 Rebuilds the Store Around Finding Apps

After a multiyear effort, the F-Droid team says version 2.0 is rolling out. The client was rewritten from scratch in Kotlin Compose, the standard toolkit for modern Android apps, which Ars Technica reports makes the store much more responsive and adds optional support for Android's Material theming. The polished look isn't really the point: per Ars, the update was largely about making it easier to find and install apps — the job a store actually has to do.

Context

F-Droid now carries thousands of open-source apps, so discovery is the hard problem, not the download button.

Pushback

No tracking cuts both ways. Ars notes F-Droid doesn't record taps and installs to push ads and suggestions, so a store that refuses to learn from you has to earn discovery through search, categories and curators instead.
