Data Centers Need the Grid. Working Out Who Pays Is the Hard Part
Data centers consume large amounts of power and require infrastructure upgrades, NPR reports. The question the reporting lands on is distributive: it is difficult to determine how much residential customers benefit from those investments and how much they actually pay for the benefit. Those are two separate measurements, and the gap between them is where utility-rate fights usually live. Power demand from a single large customer can justify new transmission, substations or generation; the benefit may be real but diffuse, spread across a regional economy, while the cost line shows up much more legibly on a household bill. NPR's framing is that the accounting remains genuinely unresolved.
