Chilling a Hollywood soundstage to 30°F so you can see The Hateful Eight's breath
Quentin Tarantino's production moved the set of Minnie's Haberdashery off a Colorado location and onto a soundstage at Red Studios Hollywood, then chilled that stage to 30° Fahrenheit and 80 percent humidity — the point being to make the cast's exhaled breath visible on camera, according to American Cinematographer's set report. The same shoot used Ultra Panavision 70, the 2.76:1 widescreen format that had gone almost 50 years without a feature, and which Tarantino calls the widest format there is outside three-screen Cinerama. The movie's coldness is partly a photographic problem solved with HVAC: winter as a controlled studio condition rather than weather you have to chase.
