Calgary Council Passes a Unity Motion 14-1
Calgary's city council passed a motion from the mayor affirming the city's place as a vital part of the province and the country, by a vote of 14-1, CBC reports. The result followed a split among councillors over whether it was the city's place to wade into the debate on Alberta separation at all. The near-unanimous margin is less interesting than the argument that preceded it: the fight was about whether a municipality should hold a position on the province's future, not about what that position should be.
