American Investors Fund About Half of Europe's Defense Tech

As European defense spending takes off, roughly half of the money going into Europe's defense tech industry this year is coming from American investors, NPR reports. The stated reason is structural rather than cultural: European investment firms have restrictions on how they can invest, so the capital available to the sector isn't always local capital.

That arrangement works fine while money is plentiful. It also means the investors with the fewest local constraints are the ones deciding which European defense technologies get built — a dependency that a shift in American sentiment or in European rules would expose quickly.
