A Soundtrack Prize With a Habit of Calling Composers Early
The World Soundtrack Awards' Discovery of the Year prize is a newcomer award, but Variety points out that its past winners read like a list of composers who went on to define the modern film score: Gustavo Santaolalla of 21 Grams, Michael Giacchino of The Incredibles and Nicholas Britell of Moonlight all took it before the work that made them widely known. More recent winners Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist) and Jerskin Fendrix (Poor Things) look set to follow, according to the magazine. It is a reminder that a discovery award is really a bet, and this one has been settled in its favour more often than most.
