A Monday Holiday on Earth Bent Curiosity's Week on Mars

NASA's Curiosity mission update records a small collision of calendars: this week the team had two planning days, Tuesday and Friday, because Monday was Labor Day in North America, where many of the Curiosity team are based. A mission measured in sols still runs on a work week borrowed from Earth. The image accompanying the update was taken with the rover's Right Navigation Camera on 14 September 2026 — Sol 5014, or Martian day 5,014 of the Mars Science Laboratory mission — at 02:05:20 UTC. What it shows is deliberately subtle: banding that can be picked out in tonal differences rather than as sharp edges. The compressed week is the ordinary cost of exploration. Mars time is counted in sols; the work that produces it is scheduled around holidays in North America.
